Goals of the School Library Media
Program
The school media
center is an integral part of the curriculum and exists to support the
educational goals of the school itself. It offers educational and enrichment
materials for the students and resource materials
for the faculty. Collection
development is based on curriculum needs, program needs, instructional needs of
individual students, and professional needs of teachers. In order to remain
responsive to these ever changing needs, goals are set each year based on an
annual assessment of the school media program and collection. Long-term goals
are set that are reviewed annually and modified to complement the overall goals
of the school.
The goals of the media program are:
1. To support and enrich the
curriculum, taking into consideration the varied interests, abilities, and
maturity levels of the students served;
2. To stimulate student growth in
abilities and understanding which are closely related to living, working and
playing together in a democratic environment;
3. To develop, under guidance, the
practice of critical analysis of all media;
4. To stimulate
growth in factual knowledge, literary appreciation, aesthetic values, and
ethical and moral values.
The media center
staff provides instruction in the use of all media materials and equipment and
assists teachers and students in locating and using information. The media
center provides an environment that will encourage students to become life-long
learners.
