Who Are School Counselors?
School counselors are certified educators who address all students’ academic, personal/social and career development needs. Each professional school counselor applies a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes and enhances student achievement in a safe learning environment. School counselors provide various services to students including guidance curriculum, individual student planning, responsive services, individual or group counseling, consultations with parents, teachers, and other educators, and referrals to school support services and/or community resources.

A Little Bit about Myself

My name is Sarah Owens, and I am the school counselor at Lanier County Elementary School. I earned my B.S. in Psychology and Counseling and my Master’s in School Counseling at Valdosta State University. Upon graduating, I accepted employment at Lanier County Elementary School. The 2007-2008 school year will be my 2nd year at the school.

School Counseling Services at Lanier Elementary:

Individual Counseling

Individual counseling sessions are scheduled with students for both proactive and reactive responses to student needs in the areas of personal/social, academic, and career. Students may self-refer or be referred by teachers, parents, and/or other educators. Some of the content covered in an individual counseling sessions addresses behavior, social skills, anger, depression, grief, anxiety, friendship, stressed concerns, and self-esteem.

Classroom Guidance

Classroom guidance lessons are conducted throughout the school year. These lessons are conducted based upon teacher requests.

Some topics may include bullying, test taking skills, and/or study skills.

Group Counseling
Group counseling offers school counselors the opportunity to meet with a group of students who share the same issues and concerns. Groups are scheduled based upon needs assessments as well as referrals.
