Who Are School Counselors?
School counselors are certified educators who address all students’
academic, personal/social and career development needs. Each professional school
counselor applies a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes and
enhances student achievement in a safe learning environment. School counselors
provide various services to students including guidance curriculum, individual
student planning, responsive services, individual or group counseling,
consultations with parents, teachers, and other educators, and referrals to
school support services and/or community resources.

A Little Bit
about Myself
My name is Sarah Owens, and I
am the school counselor at Lanier County Elementary School. I earned my B.S.
in Psychology and Counseling and my Master’s in School Counseling at
Valdosta
State
University. Upon
graduating, I accepted employment at
Lanier
County
Elementary School. The
2007-2008 school year will be my 2nd year at the school. |
School Counseling Services at Lanier Elementary:
Individual Counseling
Individual counseling sessions are scheduled with students
for both proactive and reactive responses to student needs in the areas of
personal/social, academic, and career. Students may self-refer or be referred by
teachers, parents, and/or other educators. Some of the content covered in an
individual counseling sessions addresses behavior, social skills, anger,
depression, grief, anxiety, friendship, stressed concerns, and self-esteem.
Classroom Guidance
Classroom guidance lessons are conducted throughout the
school year. These lessons are conducted based upon teacher requests.
Some topics may include bullying, test taking skills,
and/or study skills.
Group Counseling
Group counseling offers school counselors the opportunity to meet with a group
of students who share the same issues and concerns. Groups are scheduled based
upon needs assessments as well as referrals.
